New Middle School, East Brandywine Township, Chester County, PA

New Middle SchoolNave Newell is currently working with the DASD on a new 170,000 sf middle school with three multi-purpose fields including baseball, softball and football with an all-weather track.  Site work associated with the project includes utility, parking, circulation, athletic fields and stormwater management.

Nave Newell has been working closely with the District staff, the Township and their landscape architect to develop a landscape plan that satisfies all parties by meeting the Township’s stringent landscaping requirements while keeping it easy for the school to maintain.  New Chester County Conservation District (CCCD) guidelines instituted at the beginning of 2010 for projects located within in the Cold Water Fishes (CWF) stream classification; require us to revise design of the E&S basins to meet these standards.

Ground-breaking for the new school is scheduled in the fall of 2011 with plans to open for the 2013-2014 school year.  Initially the school will accommodate 950 students, but has the maximum capacity for 1350.  The new middle school is pursuing LEED Silver certification.

Springton Manor Elementary School, Wallace Township, PA

Springton Manor Elementary SchoolDowningtown Area School District needed to accommodate the growing student population within their district.  They proposed to build a new elementary school in Wallace Township and selected KCBA Architects to design the new facility.  KCBA selected Nave Newell to provide required land development services for the new 750-student elementary school, located on a 25.55 acre site.

Use and land development approvals were required from the Township, as well as PennDOT approval for the proposed access drive, which required close coordination with the school district during acquisition of additional right-of-way for the lowering of State Road. Coordination was also required with the Township Municipal Authority to permit discharge of the proposed sanitary sewer directly into an existing treatment lagoon.

Within 13 months, Nave Newell obtained conditional use, land development and Penn-DOT approvals for this project; ensuring that the District would be in a position to construct the new school for occupancy beginning in 2008.

Kurtz Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia, PA

Kurtz Center for Performing ArtsThe William Penn Charter School developed a campus master plan to address space and programmatic needs as the funds become available for their 44-acre campus.  The school placed a high priority to raise funds to build a new performing arts center with a green building component. The resulting 30,100 sf LEED Gold Certified performing arts center includes a 650-seat theatre, a band and choral room, several offices and a storage area.

Nave Newell worked with the architect on the development of preliminary and final design for the new facility. Nave Newell participated in collaborative meetings with the architect, Penn Charter and neighbors to develop an acceptable building program for all parties.  Additional services included the preparation of a zoning exhibit for submission to the City of Philadelphia to receive height variance, expert testimony before the City’s Zoning Board of Adjustment and a land development plan set to receive necessary City of Philadelphia approvals as well as provide site grading, landscape, lighting and E&S controls for the proposed building. Nave Newell was able to procure an NPDES permit from the PADEP and Philadelphia Water Department within 60 days.
